Buildings insurance
Building insurance protects the structure of your home, including its outbuildings, against damage caused by things like flood, fire, storm, earthquakes, theft, attempted theft, vandalism, fallen trees, subsidence or collisions. It’ll cover the cost to rebuild, repair or replace things like your roof, walls, windows, doors or fitted bathrooms and kitchens. This also includes the costs of demolition, site clearance, and architects' fees.
Buildings insurance will be a condition of the mortgage and must be at least enough to cover the outstanding mortgage.
But buildings insurance doesn’t protect your belongings, like electrical items, clothing or furniture.
Contents insurance protects your belongings against theft or damage caused by things like fire, theft, flood, fire, storm or vandalism. It’ll cover the cost to repair or replace things like furniture, clothing and jewellery, electronic goods, curtains and even carpets. It may also cover you if you take items out of the home. The insurance covers your own possessions and those of close family members living with you. Home contents insurance can also pay a lump sum if you die from a fire, theft or accident at home. It can also cover you if someone is injured or dies when visiting you.
